Lessons from AIYEP

One of the things I like to do is to ask people, ‘What have you learned today?’. As the days go past and AIYEP draws to an end, it has proven apt to ask myself the very same question. Lessons learned from our time in Tana Beru and Makassar have been many - from creating libraries, teaching AFL and navigating local politics, all the way to trapping pigs, and becoming a trainee addiction counsellor (all the while possessing a particularly impressive moustache)!  Read more...

Developing new ideas

Community development is a big part of what I do. Melbourne is the base for a lot of my work but Indonesia has twice been a temporary base. The first time I was in Yogyakarta for the UGM KKN program with ACICIS. This time AIYEP has placed me in the scenic Tanah Beru, South Sulawesi. Physical Education in Indonesia

My work placement at Athirah Islamic School was a highly interesting experience. From the first day, I learnt a lot about Islam and its relationship with education. At the school, I was tasked with helping the students and teachers at the senior high school (or SMA) to improve their English, along with assisting the sports teachers in implementing the school’s sports program. During my time at the school, I conversed with many of the students and staff about life in Australia and my experience as a university student at the University of Queensland.  Read more...

AIYEP and the counterpart system

Upon learning about the AIYEP experience, the counterpart system first seemed a bit peculiar. Why should fully grown adults have to do everything with a buddy, including sleeping in the same bed? However, after less than a week in Indonesia, I could already see that having a counterpart that you can rely upon, trust and share experiences with is one of the highlights of AIYEP.  Read more...
